I’m grateful to the CENTER for providing artists the opportunity to offer their work for review, and for providing us as judges the means to see the range and the spirit of so much exceptional photography. Creating art is an act of faith. It requires mastering a craft, often overcoming doubts to externalize a way of seeing. For the artist it is a means of expression that can also be driven by the compulsion to move viewers to question and to act. As an audience, we all benefit.

This year, memorable projects ranged across an encouraging profusion of themes. Among them: pride in identity, asserting, We are here, and we are worthy; the intimacy of exploring a threatened way of life, creating a respectful entry point for outsiders; innovative interpretations of news or environmental issues, seemingly made in hopes that sending the work into the world will effect change; reimaginings of alternative history; immersive abstracts; conjuring mysteries from the everyday we all recognize.

A few reflections upon judging—
Often I found a surprising disconnect between the artist statements and the work itself. A masterfully written description could lead to disappointment when seeing images that failed to live up to the promise of the words; or conversely, a barrage of jargon could end in relief and delight upon seeing the images. Concise statements that embodied profound concepts in concrete ideas directly related to the images were most effective for me.

Within any body of work, there is tension between coherence and variety. When is repetition an effective technique, and when does it lose our attention? If a set of images feels too scattered, I might sense that a perceptive curator could still help the project come together. But if the submitted work is that fragmented, does the artist have that fundamental understanding of what they are striving for?

There were times I marveled at incredible levels of craft, but asked, is the content worthy? Does this artist have anything to say? Perhaps most painful is seeing two or three spectacular images drowning amidst too many weak and predictable images.

I’ll also admit that I was concerned by how many entries consisted of self-portraiture. This may not be a surprise, given that we are emerging from years of pandemic lockdown in which we were compelled to isolate. I understand that many photographers are using their own bodies as a microcosm to illuminate universal concerns, or in the therapeutic service of others in extremis. And I included more than one inventive self-portrait entry among my highest rated. But my hope is that more artists will shift their gaze outward as we move forward.

Acknowledging that my fellow jurors and future jurors may feel completely differently, I will venture to say that I was most inspired by projects that focused on a single topic with a distinctive, yet coherent, visual approach--rather than by entries containing multiple projects, or single images united only by the fact that they were made by one artist.

I’m struck by how many remarkable artists are making stellar work deserving of greater recognition, and hope this exposure at the Review will bring them an abundance of opportunities.

In the unfolding narrative of contemporary photography, we find ourselves at a confluence where technology, art, and the human experience intersect, creating a rich tapestry that mirrors the complexity of our world. As a juror for Review Santa Fe 2024, I was privileged to embark on a journey through a landscape teeming with innovation, emotion, and exploration. Each submission was a testament to the photographer’s dedication to not just capturing moments, but to telling stories that transcend boundaries and challenge perceptions.

I approached the jurying process with an eye for works that not only push the envelope aesthetically but also engage deeply with their subjects. It was exhilarating to witness the myriad ways in which contemporary photographers harness their craft to explore, critique, and celebrate the myriad dimensions of human existence.

From the intimate and personal to the broad and societal, the submissions to Review Santa Fe 2024 were a kaleidoscope of the human condition. Some artists delved into the realms of identity, heritage, and belonging, weaving their narratives with threads of vulnerability and resilience. Others turned their lenses towards the pressing issues of our time—climate change, social justice, migration—inviting us to reflect, empathize, and act. And then there were those who, through their artistry, reminded us of the beauty that lies in the mundane, the overlooked, or the purely abstract.

What struck me most profoundly was the sense of commitment evident in each body of work. Whether through meticulous research, innovative techniques, or the sheer force of personal vision, these photographers demonstrated a profound engagement with their subjects and their craft. Their works are not merely images; they are conversations, invitations to pause, to feel, to think.

In this year’s selection, I was particularly drawn to projects that embody a spirit of experimentation while maintaining a clear narrative or conceptual thread. These works stood out not just for their technical excellence or visual impact, but for their ability to create new spaces for understanding and connection. They challenge us to see beyond the surface, to question our assumptions, and to imagine new possibilities.

Review Santa Fe 2024 showcases the remarkable diversity and vibrancy of contemporary photography. It has been an immense honor to contribute to this celebration of creativity and insight. As we move forward, I am inspired by the potential of photography not just as a medium of expression, but as a powerful tool for change. Through the lens of these talented artists, we catch glimpses of the world as it is, as it was, and as it might be. Their work is a beacon, guiding us towards a future where art and empathy illuminate the path to a more inclusive and understanding world.

At the heart of CENTER Santa Fe’s mission lies a commitment to advancing socially and environmentally engaged lens-based media that not only reflects but actively shapes our collective human experience. As we gather for the 2024 Review Santa Fe, we celebrate the transformative power of photography as a medium that transcends cultural boundaries and addresses global and personal narratives. Our selection process is deeply rooted in recognizing works that are visually and conceptually outstanding—works that hold the viewer’s attention, communicate compelling ideas, and invite broader dialogues.

As an artist and judge, my practice—described as trans-customary—intersects Indigenous knowledge systems with new technologies and materials, reshaping the boundaries of contemporary art. My projects, like Auto Immune Response, The Critical Indigenous Photographic Exchange (CIPX), and Connecting the Dots for a Just Transition, underscore the role of lens-based media in critiquing and altering the narratives surrounding Indigenous communities and environmental issues. These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to using art as a catalyst for social change and cultural survival, themes we prioritize in this year’s Review.

The photographers honored this year are those whose work demonstrates not only excellence in craft but also courage and insight into the complex tapestry of human conditions. They leverage their artistic voice to challenge, question, and inspire, aligning with CENTER’s mission to deepen public understanding through critical engagement and creative exploration.

Our 2024 Review emphasizes the importance of narrative and innovation in photography. We honor artists who are at pivotal stages in their careers, ready to utilize the exposure, networks, and opportunities that CENTER provides. These photographers not only reflect on the world as it is but also imagine what it might become. They are the storytellers and visionaries who utilize photography to connect us all to our shared humanity and the planet we inhabit.
